Doors

Any door has opportunity and adversity on either side and one has to either push or pull to open the door .. We have similar doors in life .. Pull to open or close OR push to open or close ...either ways efforts are needed !
Very seldom you may find those automatic doors which open & close without you needing to take efforts.. But remember such doors will let you in or let you out as much as they would open or close for others !

Early Warning Signs of Star getting Disengaged !

There has been an 18% drop in the engagement levels of our high-potential employees, and one in four plan on quitting within the year.

Are you a Hi-Potential  Employee?

■ Are you considered 91% more valuable to the organization than average employees.
■ Do you also contribute disproportionately to the organization’s future leadership pipeline.
■ Do you think you have a 75% chance to succeed at more senior, critical roles, compared to only 25% for high performers lacking high potential

Do you have the basic three components ?
# Ability is most important,
# Engagement second
# Aspiration third

Though none alone can serve as a guarantee to be High-Potential !

Indian Barber

This is called applying marketing concepts at the grassroot level!
STP - segmenting -targeting-positioning in the men's hair cutting market in Singapore !

This barber branded himself as the Indian Barber !
His shop is just alongside a market and serval barber shops operated by Chinese Singaporeans or Malayasian Singaporeans !

By branding his shop as Indian Barber he is targeting the Indian community around this place , which includes Indians, Malaysian Indians , some Chinese and numerous children of these communities !

Is this unique or exemplarily different ? Perhaps not ! But what's different is starting with this idea and having a fan following ! He has uniquely priced himself alongside the other saloons but displays photos of Indian Gods and agrabatti in his shop!

Does not have brand new saloon chairs but functionally useful and Indians like me don't care much on these aspects as long as the haircut is
Good enough and at a cost which drives value for oneself!

I am thinking what would be the factors that might help the saloon improve or lose business moving ahead!
Aesthetics, price point , service , relationship , diff segment , offer, discount, loyalty card , tie-up....

What will be the game changer !

Wants & Desires

Somedays you need to really introspect to a nano level to know what is that you "want" and what is that you "desire"

Looking deep inside the real you !

Though wanting more that what you desire can help you to put in more efforts and energy as it shows your zeal to succeed.. But there is a fine line in understanding this versus misunderstanding this!

The desire and want got me here.. as somewhere deep inside I believe I deserved this after the struggle, pulls, pushes, pressures I underwent !

This has been no longer a destination but a sincere journey to succeed the race and competing with rats, rodents, mouse, donkeys, tigers, sheeps, bisons, elephants and many more different kinds from this human jungle

Built In Quality {BIQ}

* What is the Worst/Biggest Disaster in Aerospace History ??

27 March 1977
Number of people killed: 583
Two Boeing 747s, operated by KLM and Pan Am, collide on a foggy runway at Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands. The KLM jet departed without permission, striking the Pan Am jet as it taxied along the same runway. Confusion over instructions and a blockage of radio transmissions contributed to the crash.

Realized that this is how important is quality in Aero industry, hence its paramount to ensure

<> Don't Pass Quality Defects
<> Don't Make Quality Defects
<> Don't Accept Quality Defects

Today did a Quality Gemba and it was an enriching experience to get involved to ensure an extra pairs of eyes and work towards a better quality towards product quality.

Yesterday we were recruiting... Today you are a staff member ~

One of the major setback for new employees are OVER PROMISES !...made by directly/ indirectly by employers, recruitment agencies, HR ,hiring managers, employees who refer these new employees, college alumni, company alumni, vendors/ suppliers...

We as employers need to present more realistic picture to new joiners and even let them know about less glamorous parts.

Working for a Aerospace Strategic Business Group might look / feel ... a Glamor job role... * but whats the reality ...whats the other side of Singaporean Dollar !

Statistics ..from SHL echo the same
* 27% of new employees find that their jobs are not as described
* 44% are asked to do job beyond their job description
* 33% find job environment worse then they expected
* 40% don't find help from systems & processes
* 1 Out of 3 find it difficult to get along with colleagues and management

Probation should not be the time employers should just judge employee performance but also need to realize that employees to judge the org equally. Probation is a double edged sword.... using it is more an Art then science

Induction are the next in line which employers use it as process rather than a strategic intervention to influence new joiners. Inductions are usually inadequate and help to complicate the matters more

Chingay - Sat, February 12, 2011

Chingay is participation from both the people and commercial sector, to add greater diversity, colour, and spontaneity. People, young and old, commercial sector to people sector, arts groups, interest groups, ordinary people, talented artists, will participate in the remaking of the Chingay as a Parade of Singapore people and of Singapore life…from prancing ions, clanging cymbals and stilt walkers to boy bands and beach volleyball culture. Traditional floats of fiery Chinese dragons will cruise alongside a cool Tiger Beer float.

Chingay also evolves from a showpiece, contingent style parade to a parade of spontaneous celebration. People from all walks of life will want to be part of the Chingay Parade, to be watched and celebrated as one of the Parade's colours or gems, or as a spectator, mesmerised and clapping and grooving along. Commercial companies likewise will see Chingay as a platform to showcase and celebrate their people, their culture or art, their highly celebrated products, as colourful gems in the Parade.

In essence, the new Chingay stands for spontaneous expression of a new communal spirit and Singapore soul. It will reflect the collective dreams, cultures, and celebrations of our people and of our way of lives in Singapore in a new Chingay Parade of Dreams

What is a Culture Bump?
I first heard this term used many years ago. A Culture Bump happens when you have expectations of a certain cultural behavior within a certain cultural situation but what you experience is something quite different. Well, just like any other bump, a Culture Bump can either throw you out of or back into place. This is what it means for me. Living abroad provides the chance to experience 'bumps' every day.

The trouble with other cultures is that the people don't behave the way they're supposed to, that is, like us.The solution to this difficulty is to stop expecting them to.'

Kiasu

Learning the local words is so much fun.. especially those which are funny and witty... " Kiasu " is one of them..what it means is nothing but behavior of pulling in more than needed ..something like accumulating too much food on your plate during a buffet dinner or asking extra sachets of ketchup/sauce at the McDonald or Burger King.Waiting in a que for many hrs/ days in advance in anticipation of getting freebies / tickets.
Food for Thought!

Managing Diversity

The Managing Diversity and Equal Opportunity clause should not be a fad but should be considered as a need.

Managing diversity is about recognizing the differences between people and celebrating them, and utilizing those differences effectively in the workplace. Equal opportunities are about treating people equally, irrespective of their individual characteristics. Managing diversity is inclusive, as it has a broad focus across the whole range of individual or group characteristics: for example, flexible working practices benefit many people from many different situations. The equal opportunities approach has been interpreted by some as an ‘exclusive’ approach, as it tends to concentrate on specific groups, such as women, minority ethnics, disabled people and so on. Managing diversity is about bringing benefits to all by ensuring that everyone maximizes their personal potential and their contribution to the organization. Equal opportunities are heavily reliant on laws and regulations. Clearly, equal opportunities and diversity are interdependent; as an organization needs to emphasize both if it is to create an environment that nurtures the creativity of all employees. Equal opportunities without diversity is treating everyone the same, potentially leading to ‘political correctness’ without common sense. Diversity without equal opportunities is the complete survival of the privileged to the exclusion of others.

Neither can be truly effective without the other.

Rotary District Conference 07-Feb-2010

Group Study Exchange (GSE)
.... a journey that was outstanding with lots of pleasure, connects and interests. I owe big time for this experience i got thru Rotary and supreme thanks to Dr. Dipak Kulkarni, Dr. Deepak Purohit, Dr. Girish Gune and the entire RID 3131 for selecting me as a team member for the Outgoing team of 2009-2010 to RID 7040 to Canada & United States

I must thank Harsh Aparanji from Honeywell for granting me this leave to explore the GSE programme and helping me navigate thru the same.

Today - 7th Feb 2010 is the day when our team makes its final presentation at the Rotary District conference INDRADHANU in Khandala, Maharashtra.

The must awaited platform to see the entire rotary family and present our experiences and take-away from the programme. Seeing the Team (Usha Poonawala (Team Leader), Jyoti, Kiran, Pratik) after three months hibernation was indeed a treat, sharing those old time jokes and recollecting people, our host families, our district coordinators was simply missed for a while.
After a long awaited time-slot and delayed programme schedule , we(three teams) all were at the center stage.
  • GSE Outgoing Team 2008-2009 ( Team led by none other than Dr. Girish Gune)
  • GSE Incoming Team 2009-2010 ( from Canada & US - RID 7040)
  • GSE Outgoing Team 2009-2010 ( That's my team!! :) )
It was an wonderful experience to meet the Incoming team led by Anna with team members Tom, Jess, Lianne, Marie-Claude, seeing them so comfortable with people around was amazing. The team really has made a mark the lives of the individual host families and which is what i could see from the way they interacted and said good byes while moving to new host families.

I wish them a safe stay and an experience which they would cherish all there lives.

God Bless you with Wisdom... the World needs it !

Jonathan Livingston Seagull.. Richard Bach

A superb piece of inspirational reading for all, by Richard Bach .... " Jonathan Livingston Seagull" an extraordinary way to inspire oneself ! Putting together some of the key quotes from the book ....which will help anyone who has read the book to recollect the whole story thread by reading these quotes !

  • " I just want to know what i can do in the air and what i can't , that's all. I just want to know."
  • He felt better for his decision to be JUST another one of the Flock
  • "Stand to the centre of shame"
  • "Violating the dignity and tradition of the Gull Familiy"
  • "Life is the unknown and the unknownable, expect that we are put into this world to eat , to stay alive as long as we possibly can "
  • " Who is more responsible than a gull who finds and follows a meaning, a higher purpose for life"
  • " To learn , to discover,to be free!"
  • They refused to believe the glory of flight that awaited them; they refused to open their eyes and see
  • He learned to fly, and he was not sorry for the price that he had paid.
  • The boredome and fear and anger are the reasons that a gull's life is so short, and will these gone from his thoughts, he lived a long fine life indeed.
  • " Home i have none, Flock i have none. I am Outcast "
  • You have learned . One school is finished, and the time has come for another to begin.
  • Using its wings as means to the end
  • Get the idea that our purpose for living is to find that perfection and show it forth.
  • We choose our next world through what we learn in this one. Learn nothing, and the next world is the same as this one, all the same limitations and lead weights to overcome
  • Heaven is not a place, and it is not a time. Heaven is being perfect.
  • " You're very fast flier, aren't you ?"... " I....enjoy SPEED"
  • " How do you do that? What does it feel like? How far can you go?"
  • " You can go to any place and to anytime that you wish to go "
  • " I have gone everywhere and everywhen i can think of "
  • " Heaven isn't a place or a time, because place and time are so very meaningless. Heaven is ..."
  • " Tell me what to do "
  • " To fly as fast as thought, to anywhere that is," " you must begin by knowing that you have already arrived"
  • " You didn't need faith to fly, you needed to understand flying. This is just the same. Now try again ..."
  • " It always works, when you know what you're doing "
  • "Keep working on Love"
  • " You were an Outcast once . Why do you think that any of the gulls in your old times would listen to you now ?"
  • The gulls sees farthest who flies highest. Those gulls where you came from are standing on the ground, squawking and fighting among themselves. They're thousand miles from heaven - and you say you want to show them heaven from where they stand ! " They can't see their own wingtips!"
  • " You crazy bird" If anybody can show showone on the ground how to see thousand miles, it will be Jonathan Livingston Seagull"
  • Firm but smooth , remember
  • Your whole body, from wingtip to wingtip , is nothing more than your thought itself, in a form you can see. Break the chains of your thought and you break the chains of your body, too...."
  • Law of Flock that an outcast never returns
  • The limit of their ability
  • They call you devil or they call you God. " Are we ahead of our time?"
  • The hardest thing in the world is to convience a bird that he is free, and that he can prove it from himself if he'd just spend a little practicing? Why should that be so hard?"
  • " You don't need need me any longer. You need to keep finding yourself , a little more each day that real, unlimited ."
  • Don't believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation, look with your understanding, find out what you already know, and you 'll see the way to fly"
  • You've got to understand that segull is an unlimted idea of freedom !
"You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you touch perfect speed. "You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you touch perfect speed. And that isn't flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn't have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there."

WaterBottle is DEAD !

Now this what i call Globalization effect leading to cannibalization ...... i was on my way back from mumbai in my favorite ASIAD....n this bus halted at the signal near a school.... time was 9 n kids joining back after the diwali blast ...,., wht was different was none of the kids where carrying any TRADITIONAL waterbottles ..
but were caryying Jaal in the translucent bottles with the brand labels of the FANTA, Coke , Pepsi ( all the possible flavours !! ) , Sprite ..... i was zapped as none carried the water in the bottle made for consumable and resuseable PLASTIC..... but all without any thought or ignorance were drinking from one of the PLASTIC which is one time use and then need to be recycled .... i guess very much unaware of the health hazards linked to such an act !

Perspectives :
> Did the manufacturers of water bottles ever thought that this might happen and lead business to situations ?

> What if consuming water from these "PEPSIed & COKed" bottles leads to chronic diseases in children ?

> Can an Indian "common man" prove ....the chronic diseases is due to consumption of water thru such bottles or the source of water itself is the reason ?

> When would the per capita income of Indian improve which will " possibly" prevent this?

> When would we Indian's start taking Health , Safety and Quality seriously ?

> What are corporates like the Pepsico and Coca cola's of the world going to show an responsibility towards the society?

Teachings of Rumi

Read this book called " Teachings of Rumi " by Andrew Harvey , its abt Jelalludin Rumi who led the life of an Islamic teacher in the central Anatolia (modern Turkey) until the age of thirty-seven, when he met a wandering dervish named Shams Tabriz— through whom he encountered the Divine Presence in a way that utterly transformed him & the result was this epiphany was the greatest body of mystical poetry..captured in this book....

in my words...lot of crap put together ... reading this book as a pain in the wrong place...i meant head.. and finishing reading it was even a tougher challenge ...by the way what really took eyes away was something i am mentioning below.... pls comment back if you think its TRUE ...within the limited life you must have seen so far !

It says all love have 7 stages

7 Stages of Love

1. HAB (Attraction)
2. UNS (Infatuation)
3. ISHQ (Love)
4. AQEEDAT (Reverence)
5. IBADAT (Worship)
6. JUNOON (Obsession)
7. MAUT (Death)

Someone said love goes through the above Seven Stages......Does all love die in the end?

Love....this post doesnt mean, " i am in LOVE " !!

"Love means never having to say you are sorry"

Serendipity & Innovation

Read an interesting anecdote on the role of Serendipity on Strategic success. Scotch Guard, a runway success from 3M came into existence because of an accidental discovery. A researcher of fluorocarbons happened to spill some onto her shoe in the lab. Subsequently, she happened to spill some coffee over this same shoe in the evening and observed that the coffee just dripped away without staining the shoe. She reported the same to 3M and thus was launched the Scrotch Guard range from 3M.
The Scotch Guard example is remarkably similar to the Coca Cola story. (13th ingrediant, serendipity and all.)

Observation: Very few researchers as a matter of fact derive proportionate gains from their inventions. (Note that the book that chronicled Scotch Guard does not even mention the inventor by name!) In most cases, it seems the bulk of the benefit - the economic one - that is, seems to be cornered by the lucky employer. All that the researcher gains in the process is namesake recognition. This probably has to do with the following factors:
(1) A lack of enterpreneurial focus on the part of the researcher
(2) The relative ease of leveraging the already-established business strengths of the employer as against striking out on own from sratch.
(3) Lack of sufficient bargaining power on the employee's part viz-a-viz the employer.

Good that there have been honourable exceptions to this scenario. Consider the most inveterate inventor of them all - Einstein. Physicists the world over agree that a Thinker of that stature comes into being once in 500 years - the only comparable brains were Isaac Newton and Archimedes. The fact that most people have heard than understood what the great man said speaks for his creativity. There are so many areas where Einstein left an imprint of his genius that even today for the sheer number of inventions no scientist comes close. Imagine now what would have happened if Einstein had the attitude of the 3M researcher or the Coke inventor. Most of his ideas would have been patented and ringing cash-cows for some MNC.!

!nnovations excite me !

"Innovation does not have to have anything to do with technology." Says Vijay Govindarajan, a professor at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business and author of Ten Rules for Strategic Innovators: From Idea to Execution.

To discover which companies innovate best -- and why -- Business Week joined with The Boston Consulting Group to produce our the 25 most innovative companies.

1 Apple
2 Google
3 3M
4 Toyota
5 Microsoft
6 General Electric
7 Procter & Gamble
8 Nokia
9 Starbucks
10 IBM
11 Virgin
12 Samsung
13 Sony
14 Dell
15 IDEO

Some Innovations:
-To launch the iPod, Apple used no fewer than seven types of innovation. They included networking (a novel agreement among music companies to sell their songs online), business model (songs sold for a buck each online), and branding (how cool are those white ear buds and wires?). Consumers love the ease and feel of the iPod, but it is the simplicity of the iTunes software platform that turned a great MP3 player into a revenue-gushing phenomenon

-Toyota : The Japanese auto giant is best known for an obsessive focus on innovating its manufacturing processes. But thanks to the hot-selling Prius, Toyota is earning even more respect as a product innovator. It is also collaborating more closely with suppliers to generate innovation. Last year, Toyota launched its Value Innovation strategy. Rather than work with suppliers just to cut costs of individual parts, it is delving further back in the design process to find savings spanning entire vehicle systems.

-Procter & Gamble Co has transformed its traditional in-house research and development process into an open-source innovation strategy it calls "connect and develop." The new method? Embrace the collective brains of the world. Make it a goal that 50% of the company's new products come from outside P&G's labs.Tap networks of inventors, scientists, and suppliers for new products that can be developed in-house."The ideas tend to be bigger when you have someone sitting at the center looking at the company's growth goals."

-Starbucks recently started taking product development and other cross-company teams on "inspiration" field trips to view customers and trends.

-Each time BMW begins developing a car, the project team's members -- some 200 to 300 staffers from engineering, design, production, marketing, purchasing, and finance -- are relocated from their scattered locations to the auto maker's Research and Innovation Center, called FIZ, for up to three years. Such proximity helps speed up communications (and therefore car development) and encourages face-to-face meetings that prevent late-stage conflicts between, say, marketing and engineering.

-Infosys has a “voice of youth" program where each year the company selects nine top-performing young guns -- each under 30 -- to participate in its eight yearly senior management council meetings, presenting and discussing their ideas with the top leadership team.

-Nokia understood how illiterate people live in a world full of numbers and letters and came up with a new "iconic" menu that lets illiterate customers navigate contact lists made up of images. Other innovative ideas followed. By listening to customers in poorer countries, Nokia learned that phones had to be more durable, since they're often the most expensive item these customers will buy. To function in a tropical climate, it made the phones more moisture-resistant. It even used special screens that are more legible in bright sunlight

Obstacles in Innovation:
1.The No. 1 obstacle is slow development times. Fast-changing consumer demands, global outsourcing, and open-source software make speed to market paramount today. Yet companies often can't organize themselves to move faster.

2.A lack of coordination is the second-biggest barrier to innovation, according to the survey's findings. But collaboration requires much more than paying lip service to breaking down silos

3.One of the biggest mistakes companies may make is tying managers' incentives too directly to specific innovation metrics.

4.Getting good consumer insight is the fourth most cited obstacle to innovation in our survey. Blogs and online communities now make it easier to know what customers are thinking

Some observations:
-While 72% of the senior executives in the survey named innovation as one of their top three priorities, almost half said they were dissatisfied with the returns on their investments in that area.

-Today, innovation is about much more than new products. It is about reinventing business processes and building entirely new markets that meet untapped customer needs. Most important, as the Internet and globalization widen the pool of new ideas, it's about selecting and executing the right ideas and bringing them to market in record time.

-India and China are growing sources of innovation for companies, too. When asked where their company planned to increase R&D spending, 44% answered India, 44% said China, and 48% said Western Europe. Managers tended to look to the U.S. and Canada for idea generation, while a lower percentage looked to Europe for the same tasks. India and China, though, are still seen as centers for product development.

Business is made up of ambiguous victories and nebulous defeats. Claim them all as victories.

Keep track of what you do; someone is sure to ask.

Be comfortable around senior managers, or learn to fake it. Never bring your boss a problem without some solution. You are getting paid to think, not to whine.

  • Long hours dont mean anything; results count, not effort.
  • Write down ideas; they get lost, like good pens.
  • Always arrive at work 30 minutes before your boss.
  • Help other people network for jobs. You never know when your turn will come.
  • Dont take days off sick unless you are.
  • Assume no one can/will keep a secret.
  • Know when you do your bestmorning, night, under pressure, relaxed.
  • Schedule and prioritize your work accordingly.
  • Treat everyone who works in the organization with respect and dignity, whether it be the cleaner or the managing director.
  • Dont ever be patronizing.
  • Never appear stressed in front of a client, a customer or your boss.
  • Take a deep breath and ask yourself: In the course of human events, how important is this?
  • If you get the entrepreneurial urge, visit someone who has his own business. It may cure you.
  • Acknowledging someone elses contribution will repay you doubly.
  • Career planning is an oxymoron. The most exciting opportunities tend to be unplanned.
  • Always choose to do what youll remember ten years from now.
  • The size of your office is not as important as the size of your pay cheque.
  • Understand what finished work looks like and deliver your work only when it is finished.
  • The person who spends all of his or her time is not hard-working; he or she is boring.
  • Know how to write business letters including thank-you notes as well as proposals.
  • Never confuse a memo with reality. Most memos from the top are political fantasy.
  • Eliminate guilt. Dont fiddle expenses, taxes or benefits, and dont cheat colleagues.
  • Reorganizations mean that someone will lose his or her job.
  • Get on the committee that will make the recommendations.
  • Job security does not exist. Always have an answer to the question. What would I do if I lost my job tomorrow?
  • Go to the company Christmas party. Dont get drunk at the company Christmas party.
  • Avoid working at weekends. Work longer during the week if you have to.
  • The most successful people in business are interesting.
  • Sometimes you'll be on a winning streak and everything will click; take maximum advantage. When the opposite is true, hold steady and wait it out.
  • Never in your life say, as not my job.
  • Be loyal to your career, your interests and yourself.
  • Understand the skills and abilities that set you apart. Use them whenever you have an opportunity.
  • People remember the end of the project. As they say in boxing, Always finish stronger than you start.

How to Build Great Attitude in Oneself

1) Focus On The Future
Whatever challenges you face, focus on the future rather than on the past. Instead of worrying about who did what and who is to blame, focus on where you want to be and what you want to do.Get a clear mental image of your ideal successful future, and then take whatever action you can to begin moving in that direction.Get your mind, your thoughts, and your mental images on the future.
2) Think About
The SolutionWhenever you're faced with a difficulty, focus on the solution rather than on the problem. Think and talk about the ideal solution to the obstacle or setback, rather than wasting time rehashing and reflecting on the problem.Solutions are inherently positive, whereas problems are inherently negative. The instant that you begin thinking in terms of solutions, you become a positive and constructive human being.
3) Look For The Good
Assume that something good is hidden within each difficulty or challenge. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, a major proponent of positive thinking, once said, "Whenever God wants to give us a gift, he wraps it up in a problem." The bigger the gift you have coming, the bigger the problem you will receive. But the wonderful thing is that if you look for the gift, you will always find it.
4) Seek The Valuable Lesson
Assume that whatever situation you are facing at the moment is exactly the right situation you need to ultimately be successful. This situation has been sent to you to help you learn something, to help you become better, to help you expand and grow.Decide To Be PositiveA Positive Mental Attitude is indispensable to your success. You can be as positive as you want to be if you will simply think about the future, focus on the solution and look for the good.If you do what other successful people do, if you use your mind to exert mental control over the situation, you will be positive and cheerful most of the time. And you will reap the benefits enjoyed by all successful people.
Action ExercisesHere are three steps you can take immediately to put these ideas into action:
First, become solution-oriented with every difficulty you face.Make a habit of looking for the answers to your questions, the solutions to your problems.
Second, seek for the valuable lesson in every adversity.Make a list of every idea or insight you can gain from every setback or difficulty.
Third, think on paper.Take some time to write out every detail of the problem, and then take the most logical next step to solve it. Copyrights Owned by Brian Tracy

Down but not OUT !

Using NETWORK to Create a job !!

Using online networking sites could land you your next job
Looking for a job? Even if you aren't, it's important to remember that the era of lifetime employment at a single company is over. Sooner or later, most of us are going to find ourselves looking for a new employer. Bearing that in mind, you need to make sure that your next job is a step up, not a stopgap, and one of the best ways to do this is by networking with others in your industry and related fields, even while you're happily employed.
Technology is not what's going to get you a job. You still have to call up and meet the contacts you make "

How to Generate IDEAS !

1) DEFINE THE PROBLEM
To generate ideas to solve business problems we all need a starting point. You will not be able to fly from New York to Frankfurt, Germany until you first arrive at JFK. If you don't exactly know where you are you will need a map to pinpoint your current location and then gradually work your way to JFK airport.
It is imperative that you establish where you are before looking to progress. In other words study the map that will take you to New York thoroughly.

2) BRAINSTORMING
You have quite probably heard of this brilliant method. Simply, when a group of people get together and simply write down as much as you can in relation to the objectives outlined. Don't worry about about strategic planning or anything like that. Concentrate solely on idea generation. Place a time limit on the group and choose the location and the time well so that they are conducive to performance.
Make sure that everybody is at their peak and has been instructed to "Think Big". I have been able to move mountains after a very healthy brainstorming session.

3) FOCUS ENTIRELY ON WHAT YOU WANT
To give your ideas the best chance to sprout for your business solutions you are going to need to switch off to outside influences. Tolerate nothing! Eradicate the distractions, the daily frustrations and predictable dramas of your life once and for all!
Don't just fix the problem, re-design your routine so the predictable irritations can't ever bother you again!

4) HAVE A GENUINE INTEREST IN WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SOLVE
Do you remember your schooling days when you participated in sports (or particular class subjects) that you absolutely detested; as back then, they were compulsory? Do you remember how good you were at these activities? Probably not as it doesn't present itself as a good memory. But it's probably safe to say that you didn't perform well.
It's very very difficult to perform magnificently at something you're not overly fond of. If you have a vested interest in what it is you're trying to do, the likelihod of success is multiplied substantially. If you are trying to solve something that bores you to tears for heavens sake give it to someone who really likes it. This concept encompasses teamwork which is another subject altogether.
If you are self-employed you will have an automatic interest (taking into account that you have a vision of what you want your business to become).
5) LOOK AT PARALLEL PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
Relate your current problem to one that you had in the past and check for parallels between the two. The way(s) earlier problems were solved can assist you greatly in generating ideas to solve subsequent situations that present themselves.
Think laterally, think vertically, think logically. The best ideas will always come from groups working for the common goal. Give your group as much opportunity to be creative by listening twice as much as speaking. Do this as informally as possible and get past situations into the open.
You can then draw on the past successes and take them a step further with the challenge of today.
6) LOOK AT EACH TASK AS A CHALLENGE
It's true that if you look at a problem simply as a "problem" then that is exactly how many will look at it. Sure it is a problem and therefore, needs a solution. However, this thought should not be in the forefront of the mind when looking to turn this "problem" into an "asset".
The word, "problem" tends to sum up negative thoughts within us. It is these negative thoughts that can almost act as a barrier to its resolution. Now if we turn the coin over and look at it from the other side (using our example in step 1) we can look at the trip from wherever we are to New York as an adventurous challenge. It is simply by this method that we have more positive thoughts within our mind and are more likely to enjoy ourselves along the way presented with an interesting challenge as opposed to a potentially difficult problem.
Just look at the goal. How happy will you be when you arrive at Frankfurt?
7) TURN THE CHALLENGE/PROBLEM INTO A CATCHY _EXPRESSION
Okay we have looked at using past example and creating parallels to "answer our challenge". One step further is to present the challenge as a catchphrase.
Using our same example:
'Aunty Jackies For Christmas' 'Frankfurt Or Bust' (Hmmm!! This one's a bit old) 'Europe For The Summer' 'Dream Trip Of A Lifetime' 'The European Cultural Experience' 'Tomorrow travel at 250kmh legally' Doing this will give everyone an idea of the benefits associated with the attainment of the problem at hand. It puts them in the situation that they are already there.
It's so much easier to get there with a popular vision on the mind. What _expression would you suggest?

8) DAYDREAM!!! LET YOUR CEATIVE SUB-CONSCIOUS WORK FOR YOU!!!
It's no strange coincidence that during the time you drive along staring out the window, sleep in your bed, undertake your daily duties at work or anything for that matter your sub-conscious continues to work for you (even though you may not always be fully aware of this).
How often have you been doing something totally unrelated and then suddenly an idea snaps into your mind? Often? Sometimes? Never? In any case after you have put considerable time into solving your problem you will find your inner mind will work for you. Sometimes if you try too hard to solve something you end up with nothing short of major frustration.
So, as the _expression goes "chill out", have a break and sleep on it. You may be surprised at how successful switching off can be.
9) ALTER YOUR ROUTINE REGULARLYHave you ever noticed how easily we accumulate habits. Many habits can actually stifle your creativity. If you are someone who:
'travels the same route each day' 'work at the same desk and task day in day out' 'mix with the same people regularly' 'take your annual holidays to the same destination each year'
To continue generating healthy ideas to better our work, our surroundings, our family etc we must continually be looking for "newness". Familiarity is very good in that it makes us feel very very secure. It is this very security that closes our mind to change and restricts our creative abilities. Take the bus or the train across town or maybe even just a different route from time to time, broaden your job responsibilities, take on another sport or leisure activity and meet some different people with a different outlook.
You will be quietly surprised at how much positive energy you will get from doing things as small as that outlined above.
10) CARRY A NOTEPADI always have a notepad with me. I am now at the point where I can't live without one of the most simple devices known to man, which has probably been around almost since the days of the "Cave Man". A pen with a pocket size pad is brilliant as you can capture every idea that comes to you. It's absolutely useless to say "I'll write it down later" as the chances are very slim that you will in fact do that at all.
They will be your ideas. Capture them, preserve them, apply them.

Before You accept that COUNTER OFFER

Before accepting a counteroffer from your employer, consider whether you'llbe the winner or the loser in this employment maneuver.
Although no statistics are available, many employees who give notice are receiving counteroffers from their current companies to encourage them to stay.
These proposals can include one or more of the following:
  • A pay increase.
  • A promotion and/or added responsibility.
  • A promise of a future raise, promotion or other incentive.
  • The creation of a new, more appealing reporting structure ororganization.

An employer may accompany its offer with an added motivator, such as a special call or visit from the vice president or CEO and other flattering gestures. Or it may try to manipulate a departing employee by heaping on a sense of false guilt. The Prevailing View Now suppose that after months of interviews and negotiations, you accept a position with a new employer. When your current company makes a counteroffer, you decide to renege and stay where you are. The popular notion is that you're the winner. After all, you'll be paid more money, keep your tenure and possibly receive a promotion.Obviously, the jilted company loses. It must restart its search from scratch. Other good prospective candidates, who might have jumped at the job earlier, have long since accepted different positions or lost interest. The company has lost months of productivity and perhaps millions of dollars in unrecoverable revenue because the position has remained unfilled for so long. Any executive recruiters involved in the search lose as well.

Counteroffer sare a headhunter's nightmare. A recruiter can lose face with a client company, a substantial amount of time and allocated resources and possibly income when a candidate backs out after accepting. What Really Happens If you're considering a counteroffer, why should you care about the jilted company or the headhunter? Aren't you still so far ahead of the game that their misfortunes are just a small setback? Not really.

In business, your reputation can be your most valuable asset. By backing out of a commitment to a prospective employer, a candidate loses all respect from the firm's leadership.

Consider the experience of a Seattle-based pre-IPO software company, which had recruited an executive for a Midwest regional manager's role aftermonths of searching. After the candidate accepted the offer and committed to a start date, the firm stopped its search and announced the hiring to its staff, customers and alternate candidates, says Sterling Wilson, chief financial officer of the company. The finalist then reneged on his acceptance."It was devastating to our organization and our progress," says Mr. Wilson. By reneging, the candidate seriously jeopardized the company's relationships and credibility, and the alternate candidates were no longer available."The search had to start over," says Mr. Wilson. "It caused a serious momentum loss for us, and didn't reflect well on the candidate personally." Candidates who renege after committing to start dates are called "no-shows."One spurned vice president was so angry with a candidate who reneged that he shredded the person's resume, The Wall Street Journal reported recently.Another hiring manager complained of how draining it had been to lose a candidate at the final hour.

Why should a candidate care what a recruiter thinks, especially if they had never met previously?

The value of a good search professional shouldn't be underestimated. He or she can do more for you during a career lifetime than you might realize. But out of concern for client companies, reputable recruiters avoid candidates whose word can't be trusted. It's Never the Same Again The current employer who gains back its staffer may seem to be the big winner. Initially, it may appear to lose ground because of the pay increase or promotion it extends. However, these costs are minimal compared to the loss of momentum on a project or the expense of recruiting a replacement.Still, winning back an employee is only a short-term fix, and the move mayultimately cause worse personnel issues. First, the company's relationship with the employee is never the same. Most employees who accept counteroffers leave within six to 12 months, merely deferring their inevitable replacement. "We know the person is mentally 'out-the-door' and it's probable that he or she will leave in the not-too-distant future anyway," says a Dallas-basedformer partner of a Big-Five consulting firm. "We never quite trust them, and immediately begin contingency planning for a replacement-on our time frame.

"Second, the line of previously loyal employees threatening to leave to gain a raise begins forming at the door. "If someone isn't committed to being here, it compromises our team and causes broad, negative ramifications far greater than losing that person," the former partner says. Ultimately, the integrity of the employer, manager and indecisive recruit can all be irreversibly damaged.Perceived Blackmail Does the "no-show" really win? He or she may earn a bit more money, but the increase is borrowed from future earnings. An employer may make or attempt a few improvements, but will rarely change its culture for one employee. The employee's integrity, loyalty and commitment are forever in question after this perceived blackmail tactic. He or she will never be trusted or considered a member of the inner circle.Grudges will most certainly be held, whether overtly or covertly. Future advancement becomes more difficult, and the company will begin to seek a replacement. A former division president of a major software company relates the consequence of accepting an employment counteroffer. "After receiving and accepting a competitive offer, I announced my resignation," he says. "The response from more-senior executives was, 'you can't leave, you have too much to offer the company.' " The firm offered him a sizable compensation increase, a promotion to corporate officer and multiple stock options to stay, which he accepted.Nine months later, after a major project was nearly finished and his replacement waited in the wings, he was fired without explanation."I'm sure they thought that I was no longer a 'company man,' " he says. Cathy Norris, president of the Norris Agency, a Dallas-based search firm, says a candidate who accepted a counter offer called three months later to say he regretted the decision."Despite all the promises, none of the things that caused me to want to leave in the first place have changed," he told her. "And the big raise they gave me has since been cut back, due to budget problems. Once I'd made the decision to leave, I should have followed through."What Should You Do? It's naive for executives to be surprised by counter offers these days. Infields where talent is at a premium, the offers are a popular retention tactic. But why would a company wait until the eleventh hour to keep someone it claims to value so highly? Obviously, the move is purely defensive. You may feel flattered, but don't be fooled. A counter offer isn't about what's best for you; it's about what's best for the company.

If you expect to receive an offer to stay with your firm, how should you deal with it?

First, don't allow a counteroffer discussion to occur. Leaving the door open for discussion induces the company to invest time and resources into enticing you to stay. This can make you feel guilty, which makes it more difficult to stick to your decision to leave, even though you know you should honor it.

Take an active part in your own career management. If your company is interested in your progression, you'll know it before you decide to resign. If you change your mind and stay, your motives and methods will always be suspect. Keep a steady course and don't look back.

Submit a courteous, positive and final resignation letter that leaves no room for discussion. By behaving honorably, you may have the option of re-employment with the company or to join a former boss elsewhere later on.You'll also have the chance to start a promising new role with additional challenges, an expanded network, an untarnished reputation and a clearconscience.

Everybody wins.
